The most special, splendidly protected wilderness in the 'terai' region or the forested foothills of the Himalayas is one of the finest habitats of the tiger in India.The reserve is named after Jim Corbett - the famous hunter, author and conservationist who helped set up the Park.Extending over a tract of 520 sq.km, the Park is a large valley with dense sal trees, forested ridges and flat valleys running through It. The rolling grasslands in the valleys known as 'chaurs' allow excellent wildlife viewing. The main attraction of the Park's landscape is the magnificent Ramganga River that flows through the entire length of the Park. Numerous little forest streams and rivulets tumbling through the ravines add magic to the beautiful habitat. The Park has over 110 varieties of trees, 51 species of shrubs and over 33 kinds of bamboos and grasses. Corbett has the highest density of tiger in the country - approximately one every 5 sq.krn.
Besides the tiger, Corbett is a haven for 50 mammals, 580 kinds of birds and 25 reptile species. Along the banks of the Ramganga, one can see slender-snouted gharial and the mugger or marsh crocodile basking under the sun. The river is also rich in the magnificent mahaseer - a fine sporting fish.
One can go deep into the park riding on elephants available especially for the visitors. It is the best way to see wildlife from really dose quarters. 'Tbe Park has excellent facilities fbr staying and wildlife viewing.
